On March 22,Marib: The Minister of Public Health and Population (MoPHP) Dr. Abdel Karim Rase, Governor of Marib Mr. Rajeh al-Zuka, U.S. Ambassador Thomas Krajeski, and Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Dr. Mike Sarhan spent the day in Marib discussing United States Government (USG) support to the health sector in the Marib Governorate.
The delegation toured the President’s Hospital, which is equipped with $5.3 million of state-of-the-art medical equipment donated by the USG. The United States Government is planning to provide an additional $2 million to a private hospital management consultancy company to strengthen the hospital management in this regional hospital. They also visited the new extension at Medghil Health Center, which will provide housing to health staff and additional space for health education training. This extension is in addition to previous assistance provided in form of construction, equipment, training and an ambulance. They also visited the Health Management Institute where USAID is funding the training of 45 future midwifes who will work in Marib. Finally, Ambassador Krajeski handed over a new vehicle that will help the health office in Marib better supervise health facilities.
Partners for Health Reformplus, a USAID funded NGO, took the opportunity to present the results of a health facility survey that was conducted in collaboration with the MoPHP and the Governorate Health Office, led by Dr. Abdurabah Muftah. The survey, conducted in June 2005 with USAID funding, is part of an on-going nationwide effort to establish a health information system. These activities are funded by the United States of America, and are part of the ongoing efforts by USAID to strengthen, together with its partners in the Yemeni government, medical services for the wellbeing and health of the people of Marib.
Minister Rase noted the great strides the Ministry of Health has made in providing health services to even the most remote governorates in Yemen. He lauded the joint US-Yemeni efforts in supporting health care.
Governor al-Zuka noted that the new USG assistance to the President’s Hospital is of extraordinary significance and that the continuation to fund a private hospital management consultancy demonstrates the commitment of the United States to ensure sustainability of ongoing development projects in Marib.
Ambassador Krajeski highlighted that caring about the health of youth is not only an investment into individuals but an investment into the future prosperity of nations.
USAID Mission Director Sarhan pointed out that the Medghil clinic is a model health facility that clearly demonstrates USAID’s commitments to assist the Ministry of Health to improve delivery of health services to the people of Marib.
