The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) carried out a 3-day workshop (from December 15-17) in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MAI) and the regional Center on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development for Near East (CARANE). The objective of the workshop was to improve olive production and harvest, and covered the theoretical and practical aspects of olive production and maintenance of olive plantations. Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, along with 40 participants from several of Yemen’s governorates attended the workshop. They participated in a field visit to Kawkaban to experience hands-on “best practices” for olive production and harvest.
USAID/Yemen organized the workshop in response to Yemeni farmers’ requests to learn more about maximizing their olive crops. According to the participants, several olive producing plantations have been unable to properly handle their olive production, which requires specific attention and unique care. It is particularly difficult to store harvested olives which have a tendency to rot, and several plantations suffered significant economic loss. USAID and CARANE experts instructed the workshop participants in tools and techniques to minimize loss in their annual yield.
The workshop was inaugurated by the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Dr. Mansour Al-Hawshabi. In his speech, the Minister praised USAID efforts and its implementing partner, ARD, for supporting the agricultural sector in Yemen. He also emphasized the importance of helping farmers grow and produce olive oil as a new source of income in rural Yemen.

حكومة الولايات المتحدة تنظم ورشة عمل تدريبية لتحسين إنتاج وحصاد الزيتون في اليمن
نظمت الوكالة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية وبالتعاون مع وزارة الزراعة والري والمركزالإقليمي للإصلاح الزراعي والتنمية الريفية للشرق الأدنى ورشة عمل إستمرت من 15 إلى 17 ديسمبر. هدفت الورشة إلى تحسين إنتاج وحصاد الزيتون حيث غطت الورشة الجوانب النظرية والعملية لإنتاج الزيتون وصيانة مزارع الزيتون.
شارك في الورشة ممثلين من وزارة الزراعة والري بالإضافة إلى أربعين (40) مشاركاً من مختلف محافظات الجمهورية اليمنية. وقد تخلل ورشة العمل زيارة ميدانية للمشاركين إلى كوكبان للتعرف على أفضل الممارسات في إنتاج وحصاد الزيتون.
نظمت الوكالة الأمريكية ورشة العمل هذه تلبيةً لطلبات مقدمة من المزارعين اليمنيين لمعرفة المزيد حول زيادة محاصيل الزيتون. حيث أفاد المشاركون أن العديد من مزارعي الزيتون لم يتمكنوا من التعامل بشكلٍ سليم مع إنتاج الزيتون والذي يتطلب إهتماماً خاصاً وعنايةً فريدة.
إنه من الصعوبة بمكان تخزين حصاد الزيتون القابل للتلف كما أن العديد من مزارعي الزيتون قد عانوا من خسائر إقتصادية كبيرة. لذا فقد قام خبراء الوكالة الأمريكية والمركز الأقليمي بتعليم المشاركين حول وسائل وتقنيات الحد من الخسارة في محاصيلهم السنوية.
قام وزير الزراعة والري الدكتور/ منصور الحوشبي بإفتتاح ورشة العمل. وفي كلمته أشاد الوزير الحوشبي بجهود الوكالة الأمريكية بدعم القطاع الزراعي في اليمن. كما شدد على مساعدة المزراعين في زراعة وإنتاج زيت الزيتون ليكون مصدراً جديداً للدخل في ريف اليمن.
