January 08, 2008
U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Stephen Seche held a press round table on Monday with a group of Yemeni female journalists from the Media Woman Forum. The wide-ranging discussion covered an array of Yemeni-US related issues. Ambassador Seche stressed the U.S.-Yemeni bilateral relationship hinges on four fundamental pillars: 1) U.S. interest in regional security, stability and counterterrorism, 2) U.S. interest promoting the democratic process in Yemen through the fundamental institutions of democracy, 3) U.S. interest in education and health assistance so that the people of Yemen receive the education they need and the health care they deserve, and 4) U.S. interest in Yemen's economic development.
On Yemeni detainees held in Guantanamo Ambassador Seche said “We are working with the government of Yemen to have a delegation of Yemeni officials go to Guantanamo to interview the remaining Yemeni detainees, determine their certain identities and nationalities and work with us on a way to return them to Yemen and the point is to cooperate with Yemeni government to insure the proper treatment of these individuals as they return whether they need to be incarcerated or rehabilitated as we need to understand the kind of measures Yemeni government will be taking to insure these individuals do not to in any respect to terrorist or extremist activities."
Commenting on Yemen’s efforts in the global war on terror Ambassador Seche said “Yemen is a valued partner of the United States of America in our counterterrorism efforts in the Arabian Peninsula and more broadly in the Middle East in general,” The stability of Yemeni is an issue of critical importance to my government because due a stable and secure Yemen we can assure ourselves of a stable and secure region and this is of course in the interest not only of America but also of the international community,” added Ambassador Seche.
