U.S. Embassy in Sana'a, Yemen Announces the Democracy Fellowship Program (LDF) for 2009

The U.S. Embassy in Sana’a Yemen, along with the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) are pleased to announce the third year of the Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Program (LDF). This program will help advance political reform efforts in the Middle East and North Africa by providing emerging civic leaders and democracy activists with the opportunity to spend several months in the United States gaining both academic skills and practical experience.  In addition, LDF Fellows will be able to network with like--minded reformers and activists inside and outside the region. This third year for the LDF Program will take place March 15 to June 13, 2009 at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, followed by fellowships in various Washington, D.C. based institutions and organizations.

The LDF fellowship will cover international and domestic travel, health insurance, housing, and a moderate living stipend.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for a Democracy Fellowship Program Fellowship, applicants must have:

• Yemeni Citizenship.
• She/he has at least a bachelor's degree.
• She/he should be between the age of 25 and 40.
• She/he has at least five years of experience working as a professional in the political reform-oriented field, (e.g. civil society, rule of law, human rights, family law reform).
• She/he has a level of English language fluency.
• She/he has exhibited long–term leadership skills.

How to apply:

Each candidate should submit an updated resume along with an essay of no more than 1,000 words, in English, which answers the following questions:  How will a MEPI Leaders for Democracy Fellowship enable you to better lead your community or country towards greater democracy and citizen participation in the institutions and activities of government? What do you hope to gain from this program and what are your plans to apply the experience it offers? What changes do you hope to bring about in your country during the next 10 years?
