The Information Resource Center (IRC) is a gateway to Information USA, a network of information resources on U.S. political, economic, business, and social issues. Information USA includes specialized, substantive and accurate information about the United States and its people and policies. The IRC promotes public awareness and facilitates mutual understanding of issues pertinent to relations between the U.S. and Yemen.
The Information Resource Center now has state-of-the-art digital resources to access relevant information from all over the world. Over 5000 full-text journals are now available at the IRC on online format. The Internet is the cornerstone of information access. The IRC also provides experienced researchers to assist you in your information quest. We invite you to visit the IRC and receive an orientation to our resources. The IRC will also provide free tutorials on how to access US Internet sites. Whether your information need is in the economic, political, or cultural areas, the IRC is there to assist you.
Specialized research services for patrons can be provided by the Information Resource Specialists. The following online databases are available:
Nexis/Lexis provides online full-text legal, news and business information from over 3,200 legal and business publications.
Over 1000 periodicals with image and/or on-line full-text or abstracts. Articles can be retrieved by doing a search or by browsing the magazine or the paper itself. ProQuest covers 1994 to present.
IRC Targeted Training
The IRC designs and delivers information and communication literacy training programs for educators, journalists, and others. The IRC additionally provides custom-designed training programs to contacts on a limited range of subjects such as Project Management Skills and Proposal Writing Techniques. Info Quest Center (IQC)
Located at the Yemen American Language Institute (YALI), the IQC offers Yemenis open access to Internet and reference services with various electronic databases including Lexis-Nexis and Pro Quest. The center also is equipped with state of the art audio-visual equipment serving as a venue for the showing of films covering a wide area of subjects including documentaries on U.S. policy, history, culture, people, etc.
The IQC is staffed by student interns who maintain and manage the center assisting and servicing the informational needs of all comers and referring more difficult inquiries to the IRC staff at the Embassy.
The American Corners
The American Corner (AC) program is built around the concepts of partnership, public access, and programming. It is a collaborative effort to foster goodwill and mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States of America and the Republic of Yemen.
The American Corners are furnished with PCs equipped with high-speed Internet connections in addition to resources that incorporate books on a variety of subjects ranging from information technology, English language teaching, cultural and historical books on the U.S., and full sets of encyclopedias that include Encarta, World Book, and Britannica.
The American Corners are fully funded by the State Department and established in libraries through cooperative agreements with host academic institutes. There are currently three American Corners in the Republic of Yemen at the University of Dhamar, the University of Taiz, and the University of Hadramout in Mukalla.
