The U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Office participated in the 2009 Cultural Week at Queen Arwa University (QAU), May 12-14 in Sana’a. During the opening ceremonies, the university honored the achievements of Yemeni special-needs students in sports, chess, the arts and other fields. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Embassy Cultural Affairs Officer Walker Murray outlined the history of special needs education in the United States and praised the efforts of the university and civil society to improve the quality of life of people in Yemen with special needs. In cooperation with the English department at QAU, Embassy Public Affairs staff provided attendees with information about American culture, history and literature and distributed books and pamphlets on U.S. history and culture. The event also showcased the diversity of the QAU student body, with cultural exhibits prepared by students from other parts of the Arab world in addition to traditional Yemeni music, dancing, and dress.
